I paid some extra expense and was able to cancel the card. Finally. A few days later, Banco Itau called me to offer me a new credit card without any charges, unless I used it, in which case I would run the card from there, without any accumulated charges or insurance, or anything. I'd just keep a "Backup Plastic" just in case I ever need it. Step on the stick.
